Using an Adaptive Jump Rope
Jordan and I follow a lot of adaptive athletes on Instagram. For months before she even set foot in a CrossFit Kids class, we watched awesome adaptive athletes. Some of them include Krystal Cantu, Jared Bullock and Michael Smith. They inspire Jordan to learn how to get stronger. If you want to be inspired, check out the I Am Adaptive community. (And of course, Nubability Athletics. Their camp inspired Jordan to try CrossFit in the first place!)This fall, I noticed some of those adaptive athletes using a really cool looking one-handed jump rope. I asked around about it and it turns out one of Born Just Right's readers is friends with some leaders in the world of CrossFit. They put me in touch with the Operations Manager at Rx Smart Gear. Right now, the company is selling the "Mono Rope" by emailing my contact. But later this month, you should be able to start seeing the jump rope on their website. I told the operations manager about Jordan's favorite color and her height so they could put together a rope that matched her height. The rope is very cool. But I've heard Jared Bullock has used rope and a 1" PVC pipe to accomplish a similar jump rope experience. What's cool about all of these options is watching a one-handed athlete of all ages figure out how to jump rope on his or her own. When I encouraged Jordan to bring her rope to CrossFit class last week, she was very hesitant to try it. But then it clicked... she got to jump her rope seven times in a row. She put the rope down and ran over to hug me."Thank you, Mommy."Oh, my heart.Rx Smart Gear released the Mono Rope in 2016. The rope is an investment. But that big hug made it all worthwhile.
